Obstetric Emergencies

From the many types of calls EMS providers respond to, few are more enjoyable yet intimidating than emergency childbirth. The frequency of these calls are low, most pregnancies proceed without any significant difficulties though complications do occasionally arise. In those circumstances, EMS personnel must remember two important prehospital management principles:

  • Definitive care might not be possible in the field.
  • Appropriate care of the mother provides the most appropriate care for the fetus.

This packet will focus on common prehospital obstetrical emergencies, such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, labor, preeclampsia/eclampsia, trauma and other medical conditions.
