Wisconsin Medical Examining Board Alternatives to Opioids in Treating Acute and Chronic Pain

This course provides the participant with a comprehensive education on non-opioid treatments for both acute and chronic pain. Treatments involved include medications, behavioral, physical modalities, integrative medicine, and procedures for pain. This course meets the MEB guidelines for mandatory opioid-related education, because it provides instruction on how to effectively treat pain without relying on opioids.

This activity has been approved by the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board as meeting the requirements for the two-hour continuing education course on the responsible opioid prescribing guidelines per Med 13.03(3) of the Wisconsin Administrative Code. 

 

 

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care physicians, specialty physicians, allied health professionals, nurses, social workers, professional staff.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Understand how opioids should be used only as a last resort in treating acute and chronic pain
  2. Identify which non-opioid medications and techniques should be used for treating acute pain
  3. Identify which non-opioid medications and techniques should be used for treating chronic pain
