ForwardTeaching Primary Palliative Care
This program, which uses leading edge information and research, is a comprehensive review of the many ways to communicate end of life options to patients and families at an emotionally charged time. Although this session may seem general, the interactive discussion in the classroom session of stage B will be focused on your discipline of medicine.
Upon completion, a provider will be capable of using skills and tools for end of life discussions and assigning them appropriate importance while saving time and energy and improving patient care The goal of this course is to improve your ability to communicate and provide palliative care.
You will be completing this activity in 3 stages:
Stage A: Self Assessment, online educational module, setting goals for improvement approx 1 hour
Stage B: Attend 4 hour live session in class 4 hours
Application and practice of communication tools with your patients
Stage C: Written reflection, post-assessment, opportunity for individual coaching 30 minutes
Completing these three stages in this order will award you 20 AMA PRA Catagory 1 Credits(tm)

Learning Objectives
- Enhance basic communication skills for end-of-life care, particularly delivering bad news.
- Develop strategies for working with patients who present challenging personality or cultural differences.
- Understand resources within the system that can assist the patient in making choices.
- Incorporate accepted standards of palliative care and evidence based decision-making into discussions and the practice of caring for dying patients and their families.
- Utilize specific resources available to assist with care of terminally ill patients.
