The Donna Goll Allen 2024 Diabetes Symposium Unpacking the Diabetes Toolbox: Tools to Help Manage Diabetes

The Donna Goll Allen Diabetes Symposium is a biennial symposium created in honor of Donna Goll Allen; she was a young woman who lost her battle against diabetes.  Its purpose is to promote a better understanding of diabetes and its complications to current and future healthcare professionals to improve the quality of life for people with this disease.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, Dietitians, and other healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Recommend tools for the management of diabetes.
  2. Evaluate the factors involved in the pathophysiology of sleep apnea, the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea, and the relationship between untreated apnea and blood sugar levels, and how to address these clinically.
  3. Compare and contrast how nutrition and diabetes phone applications can help improve nutrition and glycemic goals in patients with diabetes.
  4. Incorporate up to date technologies, recent advances, updated guidelines from the American Diabetes Association in the Management of Hyperglycemia, medication therapy, and best practices into treatment plans for patients with type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
  5. Implement strategies that address infections that patients with diabetes are more prone to, how the infections differ in presentation and/or severity, and antimicrobial treatment options for various infections in patients with diabetes.
  6. Develop strategies for coping, managing depression, and behavioral cognitive therapy for patients with diabetes.
  7. Compare the differences between depression and diabetes distress; identify common mental health issues people with diabetes experience; and incorporate successful mental health interventions that used for people with diabetes.
